Tenth arrest made over man’s death, as victim of Jericho murder is named.

This was the original piece I wrote for The Oxford Blue student newspaper in 2022, covering a murder investigation that occurred in Jericho, Oxford. The piece was eventually uploaded to the website with amendments to reflect more recent developments in the case.

A tenth person has been arrested in connection with the death of a man in the Jericho area. Seven men, including four 18-year-olds, a 19-year-old, a 21-year-old, and a 22-year-old all from the Oxford area remain in police custody.

Formal identification has now taken place, and the police have confirmed the victim as Alex Innes, a 25-year-old man form Oxford. He was found seriously injured in Walton Street, Jericho, shortly before 1am on Sunday the 13th of November. He was later pronounced dead at the scene.

Post-mortem results also show that the cause of Alex’s death was a stab wound. Thames Valley Police had cordoned off the area near the junctions of Great Clarendon Street and Little Clarendon Street while the surrounding area underwent investigation. The cordon has since been lifted, with traffic and pedestrians returning to the area.

Flowers to the deceased man have since been laid at the scene, next to the Somerville College Nursery and the Blatavnik School of Government.

Senior Investigating Officer, Detective Inspector Nicola Underhill, of the Major Crime Unit, said: “We have launched a murder investigation after the death of a man in Oxford.

“His next of kin have been informed and our thoughts are with them at this difficult time. We are in the early stages of this investigation, however we have made arrests at this time.”

Superintendent Bruce Riddell, LPA commander for Oxford, said: “I would like to first extend my deepest condolences to Mr Innes’ family following this tragic incident. I am aware that this incident will cause concern within the community and as a result there will be extra officers in the Jericho and Oxford areas for the next couple of weeks to provide reassurance to the public.”

Any witnesses or others with information have been urged to contact the police by calling 101 or via the Thames Valley Police website, quoting reference 43220511338. Reports can also be made anonymously by independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
